KELA

KELA the Finnish social insurance institution responsible for providing various types of social security benefits and services to the Finnish population. I use KELA when I pay for mandatory student healthcare fees. If I don’t find a job soon, I will apply for student financial aid through KELA. I already have a European Health Insurance Card.

OmaKanta

OmaKanta is a Finnish online service that provides citizens with access to their personal health information stored in the national health archive. In order to log in to OmaKanta Pages, authentication is done via Suomi.fi identification service using either an identity card, mobile certificate or online banking credentials.

Keva

Keva is a Finnish public sector pension fund that provides pension and life insurance coverage to various public sector employees in Finland

I logged in to Keva and checked my employment pension statement. However, I did not receive any information through the service:

We were unable to generate your employment pension statement. Common reasons why the employment pension statement cannot be generated are:

  • no new pension has been accrued
  • pension matters are being handled by another pension institution

I think last one is correct.

Online stories

eBay

The pricing on eBay depends on who is selling and what is being sold. When I was younger, I used to order a lot of phone cases from eBay because of the low prices. Usually, the phone cases came from Asia and there were no customs duties on them at the time. Nowadays, I prefer to order phone accessories from domestic companies, even if they are more expensive. I don’t use eBay much these days unless I can’t find what I am looking for elsewhere or the product is being shipped from Europe.

eBay generally provides detailed information about the products they offer, including product descriptions, specifications, and images. Additionally, eBay has a rating and review system that allows customers to rate sellers and provide feedback on their products. This can help you make an informed decision when purchasing from a seller.

eBay is generally considered a reliable and trustworthy online shopping platform. However, it is important to be cautious when shopping online to avoid scams, frauds, or fake products. Make sure to use secure payment methods, avoid suspicious links, and report any issues to the customer service department.

Booking.com

Booking.com is familiar to me both as a consumer and as a representative of an accommodation establishment. I find the website useful when searching for accommodation in both domestic and international locations. I haven’t even considered looking for a room anywhere than through a similar website.

Additionally, Booking.com has a reliable and secure payment system, which ensures that users’ payment information is protected. The fees were easy and safe to charge on the property side as well.

Booking.com is a reliable and trustworthy service for booking accommodations online.

Marketing applications

Adobe Illustrator

I think Adobe Illustrator is the perfect application for marketing. I have been using Adobe Illustrator for 2 years now. When I was working for an accommodation company, I created social media posts and brochures using the software. In my most recent work experience with a school organisation, I discovered just how useful Adobe Illustrator can be. For instance, I can edit PDFs with Illustrator and create vectors.

Adobe Premiere Pro

While working for the school organisation, I learned how to use Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing. Although it was somewhat complex, the software provided me with numerous tools for creating high-quality videos. Although I can no longer use the software for free, I hope to have the opportunity to utilize it again in my next working place.

Digitalisation and digital gap

People who do not use virtual services may face several risks and challenges. People who do not use virtual services…

  • may find it difficult to access important information on various topics, such as news and events.
  • may have to physically go to different locations, which can be time-consuming and inconvenient.
  • may be more vulnerable to fraud and scams, such as phishing emails or fake websites.
  • may find it difficult to keep up with their peers or competitors because businesses and organisations rely heavily on virtual services to remain competitive.
  • may miss out on opportunities for social connection and support.

Digital Competence Test

I took the digital competence test and my best section was information, while my weakest was safety. My areas of competence include production and sharing, search, self-service and storage. For example, I am able to create, assemble, and modify content in various formats. However, I need to improve my knowledge on configuration and automation. I also struggle with solving technical problems or tasks.

Self-evaluation

I use digital services daily in my personal life. I am studying digital marketing management completely online and I utilize CampusOnline’s offerings from other institutions. I use e-books and other e-materials for my courseworks and I have not needed to borrow physical books at all during my studies.

When I started my studies in January 2022, I made myself a workspace out of an extra kitchen table and a wooden chair. Two months ago, my husband and I decided to finally buy an electric desk and a better office chair, as he often works remotely and I need to start working on my thesis. Our workspace now has two monitors, a saddle chair, and the ability to work standing up. Working is much more comfortable at the moment.

In my free time, I primarily use my smartphone to search for information, browse online stores and social media channels, talk to my friends and family and read news. The screen size of my smartphone is just right for me.

I am currently organizing our wedding. Searching for different service providers has mainly been done with my smartphone. However, I find it easier to maintain our budget and guest list on the computer with Excel. I bought a Cricut cutter to make stickers for our wedding. I noticed that it was very difficult to do what I wanted with the smartphone application. Eventually, I gave in and made great stickers using a computer program and the cutter.

I have grown accustomed to digital technology since childhood. However, digital technology has developed tremendously. It would now be strange to use a regular mobile phone instead of a smartphone, because I do everything with my smartphone. I prefer to buy products online and reserve a hotel room via internet.

Although I use online services, I have something to improve, especially when it comes to security. For example, I use passwords that are not strong enough. I am also unsure about what kind of virus protection I have on my smartphone. This task, especially the Digital Competence Test was eye-opening. I now know better what I need to develop in my digital skills.

Hello Petra,

I agree that you wrote about eBay as well. When I was younger, I used to order a lot of phone cases from eBay because of the low prices. Nowadays, I prefer to order phone accessories from Finnish companies, even if they are more expensive. I don’t use eBay much these days unless the product is being shipped by Europe. I trust more European sellers.

Hello Jenny!

I agree that it’s essential for the service providers to continuously update and improve their platforms to meet the customers’ needs. The OP-mobile app seems to be a convenient way to manage financial transactions and other important tasks without the need for a computer. My bank account is in S-Pankki and I use S-mobiili every day in my personal life as well.

You gave a good example about father, who would have to have returned the tax papers by post or straight to the tax office which is 50 km without your help. I also think that the tax office has developed in six years. Six years ago, my summer job salary was marked double on the tax return. I had to go to the nearest tax office with my pay slips and wait in line. Last year, it was enough that a tax official called me and asked about a similar issue.

Hello Mika!

You mentioned that some sellers on eBay may sell non-existent goods or products that do not meet the buyer’s expectations. Therefore, you advise potential buyers to be cautious and take steps to verify the quality and suitability of the goods before making a purchase, such as requesting a sample batch. I completely agree with this advice. I had no idea that you could request a sample batch from eBay. That’s a very smart idea! I have only ordered one product so far, but if I want to order more in the future, I will definitely follow your advice.
